How To Draw a Big Blue Cartoon Whale + 🐳 Whale Trivia for Kids

I'm not sure why whales are so popular…oh wait, I do! They're big, gentle, and majestic! Besides sharks, whales are probably the second most recognizable ocean buddies. They are the largest mammal there is currently, they can grow up to 300,000 pounds! Due to whale hunting in the 1900s, there are only 10,000-25,000 left in the wild which makes blue whales an endangered species. There are lots of different types of whales: orca, sperm, humpbacks are some of the most popular besides the most famous big blue. We're drawing a big blue whale today in this tutorial. It's really easy, kids love drawing this cute big blue dude. Let's start!

🖍️ Tools For Success

  • Paper (Our Free How To Draw Template PDF)
  • Pencil
  • Polymer Eraser
  • Outline Markers
  • Coloring Tools (I recommend Crayola's 140 Piece Coloring Case)

🎨 Parents:The only tools you need to use these how-to-draw tutorials are: an eraser, a pencil, and a piece of paper. But – if you have them around – a sketching pencil makes for fainter and softer lines that help kids build fine motor accuracy. I also recommend going over the sketch pencil with a black outline marker when you're done for a neater finish. Lastly, erase the pencil marks before adding color.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Draw a Whale

  1. On the right side of your paper, draw two curved lines adjacent to each other with a pointy top and an open end.
  2. Repeat the step but draw the curve lines on the opposite side facing the opposite direction to form the tail.
  3. Draw two long curved lines connected to the tail's open ends to form the body – the longer curve line will be the lower body and the shorter one the upper body. Make sure that these curves connect with a pointy end.
  4. From the point where the upper and lower body meets, draw a straight line going to the tail with two short adjacent curved lines in the middle to form the fin. The curved fin in the middle looks like a half whale's tail.
  5. Now, let's complete the details with a small circular eye on the head.
  6. Draw three vertically curved lines on the lower body.
  7. Then draw two long curved water sprouts with two tiny droplets of water on top of the whale's head, and a small curved fin beneath the whale's upper body.
  8. Let's have our blue whale with a grey-colored lower body!

Whale Trivia for Kiddos

  • Blue whales are social creatures but they are also incredibly loud. Whale calls are the loudest any creature on the planet makes, it can be heard up to 500 miles away. Their songs are louder than a jet engine and jackhammers.
  • Whales live to a similar age as healthy modern humans (about 80-100 years.)
  • A blue whale's tongue weighs as much as an elephant.
  • Whales are bigger and heavier than the heaviest dinosaurs.
  • Blue whales talk to each other using chirps and moans.
  • Baleens (the mouth filter) on whales were used in 19th-century fashion for humans as corsets and parisols.
  • You can tell a Blue whale's age by their ear wax, similar to counting the rings on a sliced tree trunk.
  • Whales breathe through blowholes on top of their heads and they breathe air just like us. Unlike us, whales can hold their breath for more than two hours.
  • Whales eat krill, tuna, salmon, cod as the main staples of their diet. A well-fed whale eats 40 million krill in the summer. They eat about 9000 pounds of food in a day. Krill are mini shrimp creatures that seals and whales love to eat.
  • Whales move to warmer water when they want to have babies.
  • Blue whales are as long as 3 full-length school buses. Oceans are great places to live for Whales because there is no gravity.
  • Dolphins are actually a type of whale!
  • Whales are known for their splashes which is called "breeching" – this is when they jump out of the water before and land with a huge splash. Scientists don't know why they do this, the theory is either to get rid of pests or just for fun.
